English Literature

Examination Board: OCR (1901)

As with the Language examination all candidates will be entered for the Higher Tier English Literature examination. Students will be entered for one module in the January of their GCSE year.

The aims of the course are to give candidates opportunities to learn the skills necessary for literary study and encourage candidates to develop:

• the ability to read, understand and respond to a wide range of literary texts
• an awareness of social, historical and cultural contexts
• the ability to construct and convey meaning in speech and writing, matching style to audience and purpose.

There are two schemes (A or B) offered at GCSE. The Department follows the Scheme A which gives greater emphasis in written examinations to post-1914 texts

20% Unit 1 Drama for Post 1914 Written Exam 45 minutes
50% Unit 2 Poetry and Prose Post 1914 Written Exam 1hr 30 minutes
30% Unit 3 Pre- 1914 Texts Coursework
30% Unit 4 Pre 1914 Texts Written Exam 1 hr 30 minutes

*students may enter either Unit 3 (coursework) or Unit 4 (examination) or both. For certification, however, only one of these units will be counted.
