QCA has adopted a new syllabus change as from September 2007. Students are following a modular course of study as detailed below. There is no coursework element to this qualification as from September 2007.

Modular GCSE 2381

Unit 2 taken in March of year 9
Higher paper 8 – stage 1 (Non-calculator) 30 minutes – 15%
Higher paper 10 – stage 2 (Calculator allowed) 30 minutes – 15%

Unit 1 taken in June of year 9
Higher paper 6 (Section A non-calculator, section B calculator allowed) 40 minutes – 20%

Unit 3 taken in summer of year 10
Higher paper 13 (Non-calculator) 1 hour 10 minutes – 25%
Higher paper 14 (Calculator allowed) 1 hour 10 minutes – 25%

Unit 1 covers AO1 and AO4, whilst units 2 and 3 cover AO1 to AO3. All examination papers test subject knowledge from grade D to A*.

Course Description:

All students are entered for Higher tier. Most candidates will study additional topics in greater depth and this will provide a firmer foundation for Mathematics or Science A levels. The setting is based on internal examinations, Key Stage 3 SAT’s and teacher assessments. Each pupil will need a pair of compasses, protractor and a scientific calculator.

Sixth Form and Career Opportunities

Pupils who achieve grade B or above at GCSE are normally accepted on to Advanced Level Mathematics courses. Research has shown that students who achieve an A or A* enjoy more success at the highest level. All students are advised to have a good grasp of algebra and trigonometry. Competence in the subject is required for a wide range of careers, notably science, engineering, commerce and finance. Many aspects of technology and computing make extensive use of mathematics
