Higher Level
AT1 Listening Test approximately 45 Minutes 20%
Students will be expected to understand a series of extracts and conversations in German, spoken clearly and comparatively slowly. All instructions will be in English. Answers will be mainly non-verbal
AT2 Speaking Test 10 – 12 Minutes 30%
Students will be expected to complete two speaking tasks of 4-6 minutes each. One task could be a situation and another a short presentation followed by questions.
AT3 Reading Test 35 – 45 Minutes 20%
Students will be expected to read signs, posters, letters and short articles and answer questions of varying lengths in German.
AT4 Writing 30%
Students will be expected to do two supervised pieces of writing with a maximum of 60 minutes allowed per task. To achieve a grade C – A* they will need to write 400 + words.
In order to achieve a grade A* – C at GCSE students must be able to use a variety of grammatical structures including the past, present and future tenses and be able to express and justify opinions.
An understanding of German life and culture forms an integral part of this course and it is hoped that students would visit a German speaking country either on holiday or on the school exchange.
Sixth Form and Career Opportunities:
Pupils with a grade B or above will have achieved a firm foundation to study German at AS and A2 level. The acquisition of a good A Level grade would allow the student to pursue German and possibly other languages at university and would be to his/her considerable advantage in the world of employment
