Media Studies

You will study the four key concepts of Media Language including narrative and genre, Audience, Institution and Representations within at least 3 different mediums. These include Television, Film, Radio, Popular Music, Advertising, Newspapers, Magazines and Comics.

Pupils will develop a critical understanding of the impact of the mass media and its technologies on contemporary society. The course also enables pupils to explore and represent their own ideas and experiences by developing skills in more than one media.

Media Studies is a creative, academic and challenging option, which aims to open your eyes to how the media functions and how it impacts upon us as audience members.
The Scheme of Assessment comprises of two components:

Unit One: Written Paper involving you answering questions on a pre set topic. You will be expected to undertake practical creative work in the exam as well as answering questions that are based around theoretical understanding. (40%)

Unit Two: Coursework involving you producing two smaller production and theory tasks and one major production plus a detailed evaluation. (60%)

With such an emphasis on coursework we expect you to be motivated to complete coursework on time and to a high standard.

Sixth Form and Career Opportunities

This course provides pupils with a firm foundation to study media studies, film studies and the creative and media diploma at Advanced Level. Both GCSE and post-16 Media Studies courses have proven to be very popular and successful with our students.
