Course Description:

The course is divided into 3 sections.

1) Listening: Involving the study of a wide variety of musical styles and cultures. This includes the study of Western classical music from 1600, the new directions composers have taken since 1900, the developments in popular music and some aspects of world music. You will learn more about how and why it was written and performed.

2) Performing: You will learn to perform music of your own choice, both individually and as part of a small group. You will be required to perform 2 pieces for your coursework as a soloist and in ensemble. Your performances are recorded and submitted.
3) Composing: During the course, you will learn how to compose and arrange music using both traditional instruments and music technology. At the end of the course you will have completed two pieces in a form or style you have chosen from the four areas of study: Classical Music, New Directions, Popular Song and Music from around the world. Your work is recorded and submitted.
Other Information

You will need to develop a basic ability on an instrument of your choice (e.g. Keyboard). Ideally you should be grade 3-5 standard at the end of the course. The course is open to anyone with interest who is willing to learn and to work hard.

This course provides pupils with a firm foundation to study Music or Music Technology at AS and A2 level.
