Examination Details:
AT1 Listening Test 40 Minutes 25%
Students will be expected to understand a series of extracts and conversations in Spanish, spoken clearly and comparatively slowly.
AT2 Speaking Test 10 – 12 Minutes 25%
Students will be expected to respond appropriately in Spanish in clearly defined role-play situations, give a short presentation (1 minute) in Spanish on one of the topics covered, and take part in a short conversation.
AT3 Reading Test 50 Minutes 25%
Students will be expected to read signs, posters, letters and short articles and answer questions of varying lengths in Spanish.
AT4 Writing – Coursework 25%
Students will be expected to do short pieces of coursework, at least one of which must be taken under controlled conditions. The best three pieces will be submitted to the examination board.
In order to achieve a grade A* – C at GCSE students must be able to use a variety of grammatical structures including the past, present and future tenses and be able to express and justify opinions.
An understanding of Spanish life and culture forms an integral part of this course and it is hoped that students would visit a Spanish speaking country either on holiday or on a school journey.
Sixth Form and Career Opportunities:
Pupils with a grade B or above will have achieved a firm foundation to study Spanish at AS and A2 level. The acquisition of a good A Level grade would allow the student to pursue Spanish and possibly other languages at university and would be to his considerable advantage in the world of employment
